Eliminating Drone Hijacking with Real-Time Authenticated MAVLink Telemetry Encryption

Core engineering and protocols for MAVLink Telemetry & Control Link.

The Vulnerability of Unauthenticated Drone Control Links

Standard MAVLink protocol streams used in commercial drones (PX4, ArduPilot) are frequently transmitted in cleartext or protected only by weak symmetric passwords. Adversaries armed with software-defined radios (SDR) can inject spoofed waypoint commands or eavesdrop on high-definition video feeds. UAVTPM establishes an encrypted, authenticated control tunnel.

Low-Latency Cryptographic Pipeline

UAVTPM executes an ephemeral ML-KEM-512 key exchange at connection establishment, deriving a 256-bit symmetric stream cipher key (ChaCha20-Poly1305). Individual telemetry frames are authenticated with lightweight MACs, ensuring sub-2-millisecond control latency for agile manual or autonomous flight.
